You don’t have to be in a dead end job to feel like you aren’t going anywhere. That’s how current owners Chris Walsh and Glenn Bernabeo felt before they took over River Horse in 2007. Finance geeks living in a world without soul, they realized desk jobs were not how they pictured their lives would play out. Today they say they may not end up as the greatest success story on earth, but at least they’re having a ball trying!

Their goal is to make full-bodied, full-flavored beers that are balanced and have something that appeals to every lover of craft beer. It’s pretty simply, really. They source the highest quality ingredients, put a ton of care and diligence into their process, making the very best beer they can. Chris Rakow is their Head Brewer.

Their Hippo logo gives credit to the ancient Egyptians, who did so many cool things – one of which was becoming the first beer geeks! While drinking beer and eating dates, they wondered what it would taste like if they combined the two. Pure innovation. Whenever the brewing process was depicted in their hieroglyphics, the hippo was always present. River Horse is Greek for Hippopotamus. It represents sustenance and fertility. Get ready to enjoy these selections:

Oatmeal Milk Stout is a velvety smooth stout brewed with oats and milk sugar that create a creamy finish over a dark malt base. Brewed with Golding and Hallertau hops; Pilsen, Munich, Roasted Barley, Chocolate, Black and Caramel Malts.

A classic Czech-style Pilsner, Roly Poly Pils is a super drinkable and tasty year ’round beer. A complex balance of malts round out Czech Saaz and German Hallertau Hops for a clean, crisp finish.

Featured Beer from River Horse Brewery: Oatmeal Stout & Roly Poly Pils Czech Style Pilsner

MILK STOUT — River Horse Oatmeal Milk Stout: Stouts are usually rich, very dark, full-bodied ales, top fermented, highly hopped and dry. Often times rich and creamy, this version, subtly sweet, is a perfect fit for dinners ending with any chocolate dessert. Try it at room temperature. Hint: Be sure the stout is as sweet or sweeter than the food you are serving.

PILSNER — River Horse Roly Poly Pils Czech Style Pilsner: Pilsner was the very first commercially-made lager beer, known for its pale golden color, clean taste, and full, round, malty flavor. A well-balanced bottom fermented beauty, it is a “meat and potatoes beer.” Serve with baked chicken and mild cheddar. This classic Czech style is super drinkable!
