Country: South Africa Region: Wellington Wine Valley Grape: Chenin Blanc
The magnificent Linton’s winery, the producers of Rhino Wines, was founded by French Huguenot Louis Fourie in 1699 on land granted by Cape Governor Adrian Van Der Stel. It covers 294 hectares, of which 100 are planted in vines, on the fertile slopes of the majestic Groenberg Mountain. With high rainfall, rich soils and moderate summer temperatures, a special micro-climate is created in which the winery grows their grapes, each varietal grown in the most suitable terroir.
Pale lemon in the glass, this wine is made with 100% Chenin Blanc grapes, hand harvested at dawn to keep grapes cool for vinification. It is unwooded to preserve the natural fruit flavors of the grape variety. It offers a fresh, delicate character with fruity aromas. It’s well balanced on the palate with tropical flavors like guava, citrus and passion fruit. Note its crisp, lingering finish. Delight in this wine now, as an aperitif or with salads, pasta, seafood and white meat dishes.
FOOTNOTE: Celebrating Linton Park’s commitment to preserving the environment, a portion of the profit derived from the sale of the Rhino range of wines is donated to the conservation of rhinos in South Africa. In addition, the wines are packaged in light-weight bottles, lowering the cellar’s carbon footprint.
White Rhino Chenin Blanc:
CHENIN BLANC GRAPES — An ancient grape, Chenin Blanc can be traced back to 845 AD. With good acidity level, thin skin and high natural sugar content, it is very suitable for sparkling, sweet and dry wines of character. Also known as Pineau de la Loire and Steen, this white grape variety was brought to South Africa by settlers from the Loire Valley of France. It performs exceptionally well in the warm South African climate and accounts for nearly one-fifth of all vineyard plantings there.
