Fruit Spotlight: Regal Plums

REGAL PLUMS

Plums belong to the Prunus genus of plants, and are relatives of the peach, nectarine and almond. Plums are a delicious low calorie way to get one of your five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables each day. They contain lutein, which is good for vision and as phenols, which are antioxidants. The European plum is thought to have been discovered around two thousand years ago, originating in the area near the Caspian Sea. European plums made their way across the Atlantic Ocean with the Pilgrims, who introduced them into the United States in the 17th century. (Japanese plums actually originated in China.) Plums are a juicy treat when eaten out of hand. Be sure to keep a napkin ready! They are also delicious in green or fruit salads, tarts, sauces and jams. Storage: Store ripe plums in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. When ready to eat, wash them and let them come to room temperature for best flavor.
